Manny happy returns.
The theme of this post is ‘Gone til November’. Why? Because that was the hit song the last time Michigan was cutting a rug in March’s Big Dance. But November of 1998 came and Michigan stayed gone. Then the next November came. And the next. And the next. Still no Michigan. Until this past November. November 20th, 2008 to be exact. That was the day Michigan knocked off then #4 UCLA and the rumors started spreading that Michigan might be back.
1998. That was TEN YEARS AGO! Remember Wyclef strumming that guitar while he rapped so pussy it made Lauryn Hill’s balls ache. Wasn’t that novel? NO! It was awful. A lot has changed since then. And some things have stayed the same.
Still awful.
It’s not just that it’s been a long time since Michigan made the Big Dance. It’s been a long time since any one thought about Michigan making it. NIT births were a longshot. The Tournament? That’s for powerhouse schools like Liberty and East Tennessee St.
Somehow this U-M squad found hope where hope was lost. It had to happen eventually and this group is as deserving as any. When he catches a fever Manny Harris gets SICK and Deshawn Sims is a poor man’s poor man’s Antawn Jamison. Throw in a handful of streaky-shooting white kids between 5’10 and 6’10 and they make for an interesting Bracket Buster. They are capable of beating anyone. They are also capable of losing to anyone. The ‘anyone’ they will likely lose to is Clemson in the first round.
But that won’t change anything. 63 teams will lose this tournament at some point over the next few weeks. Some of these teams will never return to “dance” again. Michigan will not be one of them. John Beilein has this program headed in the right direction. And next November we will be back with a vengeance.
